A seminar by Dr. Eden
Naby
Contributing Editor - Encyclopedia Iranica
Titled
Assyrians and Armenians of Urmiah, Iran
on the eve of WWI.
Dr. Naby's
research about the period of World War I in Iran has led to an interest in
inter-ethnic relations at the start of the 20th century in the
mixed religious and multi-ethnic town of Urmiah, and its fertile
and
well-populated villages. The relationship of Assyrians and Armenians
is particularly interesting in light of the genocide limited to Western in Azarbaijan that has led to the displacement of these two Christian groups
with Kurds and Turks, particularly in the villages of the Urmiah
plain. Using rarely consulted official statistical materials from
Iran and other records, Dr. Nabywill reconstruct the pre-WWI Christian
presence and the reasons why the WWI genocide came to be limited to this
particular portion of Iran.
